What usually fails
Slides run on a few common systems — electric through-frame or rack-and-pinion, Schwintek (in-wall), hydraulic, and cable slides — and leveling is electric or hydraulic jacks. Typical failures:
- Motors and gearboxes — burned-out slide motors, stripped gears, sheared pins.
- Schwintek synchronization — the two sides get out of sync so the slide moves crooked, binds, or stops mid-travel.
- Hydraulic leaks and low fluid — slides and jacks sharing one pump means one leak can disable both.
- Low battery voltage — the single most common cause of "dead" slides and jacks; these systems are voltage-hungry.
- Controller and switch faults — one direction works, the other doesn't; intermittent operation.
- Obstructions and seal problems — debris on the slide roof, torn wiper seals letting water in, objects jammed behind the slide inside.
Symptoms worth calling about
- Slide moves partway and stops, or one side lags the other
- Grinding, clicking, or popping sounds during travel
- Slide won't move at all, in either direction
- Jacks won't extend, won't retract, or the RV settles/sags overnight
- Hydraulic fluid visible under the rig
- Slide leaks when it rains, or daylight visible around a seal
What a mobile tech can and can't do on site
On site: voltage and controller testing, motor replacement, Schwintek re-synchronization and motor/column work, hydraulic line and fitting repair, manual-override help to get a stuck slide safely in (or out), seal replacement, and jack motor or leg service. Getting you safely movable is the first job; full repair can follow.
Honest limits: a slide that's physically damaged — bent room, floor rot underneath, structural frame damage — is shop work. The tech can usually secure the room for transport, but the structural repair itself shouldn't happen in a driveway.
Have this ready when you call
- Which slide (bedroom, living, kitchen) and whether it's stuck in, out, or halfway
- Any sounds it makes when you press the switch — a short video is gold
- Is the RV plugged in / are batteries charged? Do other 12V things work?
- Any fluid under the rig, and is the site level enough to work safely?
- RV year/make/model and where it's parked
